Why Are Women Expected to Smile All the Time ? with keely Stawicki & Frances Helena #147
24 Jul 2023
Obviously, people who smile are viewed as more amiable regardless of gender. But for women, it seems to be a requirement, rather than a contributing factor to likeability. "Smiling is very much associated as a gender marker," says Marianne LaFrance, Ph.D., a professor of women’s, gender, and sexuality studies at Yale University and author of the book Why Smile?. "It marks one’s femininity and a more communal stance toward life. Though smiling is generally a positive characteristic, it falls to women to do more of it because we want to make sure women are doing what we expect them to do, which is to care for others.” In other words, when women don’t fall within the boundaries of this social script, we’re corrected. Telling a woman to smile may seem like a fairly innocuous act, and I'm going to assume that men who do it usually don’t understand why it’s offensive. With my guest we will try to go deep in the topic , I hope you enjoy it .
