When Singapore separated from Malaysia in 1965, Singapore was an impoverished nation - struggling economy, social unrest and an unskilled workforce. Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore’s first Prime Minister, took radical steps, drawing inspiration from old Confucianist ideas, to create a world-class governance system. Singapore transitioned from third world to first within one generation. The political and economic system that Lee Kuan Yew created formed the basis of the progress in other Asian countries, like China.
