Yeah, I mean, for me, I think we touched on it earlier.
I've never really massively got involved with socials.
So, lots to talk about today.
When I come and visit, I never sort of go out.
I normally sort of, like, have so many sort of meetings and stuff and whatever, or I just, I don't know.
I've never sort of, like, been out-out to, like, a bar.
Out-out.
Out-out, yeah.
What's it like for a drinker point of view?
Because you can drink in hotels, no problem.
Just before we do, our fabulous sponsor, Kelly Estate Management Systems.
Please do go check out her website, Estate Management Systems.
Yeah, fair.
What about clubs?
What if we go dancing?
Yeah, same.
I was just going to say the exact same thing.
If there's a pub that was open like three in the afternoon until 8pm, I'd be there.
But I can't be going out at midnight anyway.
And then what do you do in the summer?
Do you stay there or do you leave?
All sorts of things on there to support you as an estate manager from...
training, modules to project management tools.
Yeah.
Okay, cool.
So obviously, business is about 10 years.
What are like the pros for you?
Like, why are you here?
What keeps you here?
Why would you recommend it?
For me, I think as a person, typically, I've not been someone that's kind of
And if you haven't already, please do tune into her new podcast called Dear Billionaire.

Right then, on with the show.
Yeah, where do I start off?
Yeah.
But especially people that aren't in this industry, they just don't sort of get it.
It's like, you're never going to get it.
That's why I like these communities, because it connects you with other people that do what you do, that do get it.
And
yeah and like I said before I think the inspiration piece is really interesting because like as they often say if you want to be successful hang out with people more successful than you because you will just be driven and inspired and all of these principles all the ultra high net worth they're not lottery winners they're people who have built very successful life themselves and so they're very inspiring people they're all a bit mental obviously because they do it to an extreme like I have a business a little old business I'm not like that but I think to get to that level there needs to be an element of like mentalness value but
I'd find that fascinating to be around.
I'd be fascinated to be around some of these people like in close proximity.
Hello, Hannah.
Welcome to the show.
Oh, thanks for having me.
Oh, sorry for dragging you on.
No, not at all.
I think it's fascinating.
And again, that's why this interview is so fascinating because every family is different.
Every family has its own dynamic and reason for being there and way of working and way of like treating people.
And it's just like...
So just to give everyone a bit of insight, I was with you, was it how long ago?
Because I kind of feel like, I don't know if it's ever, I kind of feel like if you're a lawyer and you're in London, law firm, surely all the law firms are fairly similar just from a cultural point of view, a type of work point of view.
And you could leave one law firm for another, but surely is pretty much a muchness.
I don't know.
But I kind of feel like the differences in the families are so much greater.
So if you're a house manager, you'll have such a different experience depending on where you are, who you work for, what you're doing.
I just think it's fascinating.
I feel like you could have such a long career in this industry.
Two, three weeks ago when I came out to Dubai and joined our community event.
Yeah.
As we all know, the private sector is a pretty crazy one.
You're part of our house for the community in Dubai.
Yeah, 100%.
What are some of your challenges then?
What are some of the real cons that you struggle with working in this industry?
Yeah, yeah, straight on the art.
So what do you do then?
If a nanny goes back to the Philippines for four weeks, do you get a temporary person in or do you just manage without?
Well, I was really keen to talk to you because I love talking to people who have started their career in the UK or in their home country and decided to go overseas to continue their career.
Yeah, fair.
Okay, Fab, we carry on talking about what we love and what we don't love about this industry all day long.
But it's really interesting to hear because actually some of the challenges that you experienced, a UK person wouldn't experience because all their stuff would be UK.
That never sort of happened here.
Like, my guys just wouldn't really be able to take a month off, really.
Never mind like a housekeeper at home in the UK.
But they've never needed a month off.
They only get a month in the allowance they take a year.
They'd sort of stagger it anyway.
Yeah, that's a good point.
Yeah.
And not only do you need to go and figure out the area for yourself, for your own personal life, but you need to learn, especially the householder, learn super quick, like what you need and who you need.
Because I think that's such a massive decision to make because you're leaving everything and you go into complete unknown just to work, if you like.
Yeah.
There are also very good tax benefits to living and working in Dubai.
I keep thinking all the time, how can I do this from Dubai?
Like, how can I?
It's a massive benefit, isn't it?
You know, the tax system in the UK and America is like messed up at the moment.
Okay, Pavel, I'm glad you're loving it there.
And like you say, you've had the real benefits.
I think the biggest challenge, one of the biggest challenges is the summer months.
But you've been so fortunate to go back to Europe for the summer.
That's just been a perfect setup for you.
And probably quite normal.
I don't know many people that stay for the summers.
No, not in Dubai.
I don't know any myself, put it that way.
Right then, we need to wrap this up.
I've got a quick fire round as we finish with everyone.
Don't be scared.
They're all fine.
Are you ready?
No.
You are.
Okay, how many years have you worked in the private sector?
Ten years.
Ten years.
What's the most frustrating thing someone in your team can do?
Oh, I don't know, really.
Go on holiday for four weeks.
And loads of people in the private sector, it's so normal.
Are there any language barriers having a multicultural team?
Does everybody speak English?
Everybody does that.
And so I like talking to people who have done it to sort of see the highs, the lows, etc.
It's so difficult because the manager, I kind of have it here a little bit.
It's like you want to be made with everybody, especially if you're the similar sort of age and you all sort of get on.
I only really hire people that I really like, you know, they're my kind of people.
And so that can be quite difficult because then it's absolutely fine while everything's rosy.
But then when you do disciplinary or give feedback or fire somebody, that's super difficult to do, isn't it?
So we've got loads to talk about, I think, today.
Yeah, true.
Have you got a tip for anyone starting out in the private sector?
Any sort of advice you'd tell someone thinking about it?
Do you want to sort of kick things off with giving a bit of background as sort of like where you are in the world right now, how long you've been living there for, and then take us back to where this all began for you.
No, fair.
Yeah, if you're not passionate, you're not going to last very long.
No.
Biggest high of your career so far?
What's the top memory you've got?
That's pretty cool.
And he said, good on you.
He must have respect for people asking because so many people wouldn't have the balls to ask.
Good to you.
Treasure that photo.
And then finally, apart from this podcast, obviously, any podcasts you're listening to right now?
Not only can it be very challenging to work in, but it can be pretty lonely too, as let's face it, no one really understands what it is that we do.
Any good ones that you like?
Life as a monk, it's called.
Yes, I think so.
Love it.
I love it.
I've written it down.
I've written it down.
There we go.
Look, thank you very much.
It's been lovely talking to you.
No, thanks for having me.
I reckon I'll come back out after the summer.
We'll do another little event for all you guys in the community.
Absolutely.
No, I really look forward to it.
It's been a great help.
That's good.
And like you said earlier, one of the biggest problems people have moving to a new area is you don't know anyone or anything.
And actually, these communities, if you can get in in one of our communities, you've got 80 other house managers in Dubai that can support you.
Absolutely.
and make friends, you will get on with each other.
So, oh, that's really good.
So yeah, I'm going to come back out.
We'll do another event at the end of the summer.
Anyone listening that isn't UAE and is a house manager or a PA or palace manager, get in touch and we'll get you added.
Other than that, thank you very much.
Let's stay in touch.
Is your plan to stay in Dubai long term?
Yeah, absolutely.
No plans on coming home.
I've got to work on this town.
And you've just bought a place, I think, haven't you?
You've bought yourself a new place.
Yeah, good for you.
Yeah, that's the thing.
Thank you very much.
Thanks for joining.
Thank you so much for having me, Philippa.
Take care.
See you soon.
Thank you very much, Hannah.
Thank you once again for coming on.
Honestly, I'm so grateful when people come on.
I'm always surprised when people say yes when I ask them because I really don't think it's the kind of thing that people like to do.
It's definitely something that's often out of people's comfort zone.
So it's good to do stuff outside your comfort zone.
It's good to come and share your story, give something back, help other people, do something that might feel a bit scary.
If you're one of those and you're keen to come on, reach out to me and I promise it's not scary at all.
Come and share your story.
So thank you once again, Hannah.
And as always, you know where we are.
Please do reach out to me if you want to say hi, phillipa at silverswanrecruitment.com.
You can find me on LinkedIn.
Anything you want us to discuss on the podcast, I've got more of my team members coming on, not willingly, but coming on.
Anything that you want us to talk about, any issues that are bothering you, any annoyances, we will discuss them.
And then as always, if we can help you with your recruitment, help you with your staffing, please come and visit us at silverswanrecruitment.com.
That's a wrap and we'll see you all next week.
Cheers, guys.
Yeah.
God, yes.
A generation in the industry.
Yeah.
So let's come together, help, support, educate and inspire one another, and hopefully we'll have a laugh along the way.
That's a well cushy deal for you to get to do while you're studying.
Most people are waitress.
I was used to working TGI Fridays.
That's way nicer to be working in a house.
Hello, everybody.
Welcome back to this week's episode of Life in Private Staffing with me, Philippa Smith, as you know, MD of Silver Swan Recruitment.
We say this all the time that first employer will make or break your career in this industry and if you have a nice experience you're locked in aren't you really?
Hope you're all well.
Absolutely.
Hope you've all had a good week.
I always say this, but I do like doing these weekly.
I seem to be just super busy recording loads of episodes.
It means that we can talk to loads of different types of people.
We've got loads of cool people lined up.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I think it's a real shame that often a lot of people feel that they need to fully commit themselves to the family in order to be successful.
Yeah.
I'm actually like really ahead for once.
And actually, I think that's such a messed up view.
And it's there because employers want it there.
But I think you should be able to effectively manage a household in five days a week and have like a deputy below you and have a team that you've trained to trust.
And yeah, like it's a really weird thing.
And like it's kind of nice.
I think post-COVID, I think the corporate world's changed from that now.
I've never really been this organized in my podcast.
And everyone's a big believer in protecting mental health and having time off and flexible working.
But
It's all like back in the day, 20 or 30 years ago, when like stock traders and people working in like high powered jobs, it needs to be seen to be office all the time.
And that's sort of that shifted now post COVID.
But I don't know if it has shifted in private households.
I kind of think employers, families like to see their stuff around all the time.
It's normally recording the day before it's released.
It's annoying.
But no, we've approached it very differently this season.
Yeah, no, completely silver.
Great.
So throughout all of your studies and your master's, which is very impressive.
So we're really thinking about who we're getting on and making sure we get different people from different parts of the world, etc.
My husband did a master's and God, it is such hard work.
So all of this, you worked with this American lady.
Yeah.
And then, so when you finished your degree and finished your master's, what happened then to take you to Dubai?
So today we are looking forward to talking with Hannah.
So Hannah is a British house manager, but based over in Dubai.
Yeah, good point.
And I think, like you said before, you're in a fortunate situation because you moved out because your mum's there.
So you've probably got quite a different experience than people who chose to move away in spite of missing their family.
So that's a nice sort of balance there.
When you're in the UK, you're working with an American lady.
You've worked with, I think it was British, your principal, British there.
British as a house manager between UK and UAE.
Is there much difference in that?
Is your role very different or not really?
And she's actually part of our UAE house manager community.
So I was really fortunate enough to meet with her when I was in Dubai just a couple of weeks ago.
I had a really nice afternoon and I was like, you have to come on our podcast.
I like talking to British people in different countries because I like to talk about
Yeah, that's super stressful.
And it's the principal that's asking you about it.
Exactly.
Are there many of the UK expats in the house on your work?
Are they very much local staffs?
Oh, yeah, fair.
Welcome to Life in Private Staffing with me, Philippa Smith, MD of Silver Swan Recruitment.
What made them move?
Yeah.
So many of the roles that come in through our Dubai branch are not for us.
And you can tell straight away, if they're looking for a maid, it's not for us because the salary is significantly sort of different set up than what they're looking for.
What are the differences?
But we do get contacted by quite a lot of people that want Westerners or expats to sort of go over.
Often it's sort of senior management or front of house.
But it is mad that there's such a difference between the packages of Westerners and local staff where it shouldn't be because you all have the same costs.
People, you know, people here in the UK at the moment or over in the States, considering going to work in Dubai, it's good to get a bit of an insight as to life there and what they should know and if the work's much different, etc.
You all live there.
So do you enjoy living in Dubai from like a personal point of view?
The key word you said there was once he got it together, right?
Because the issue that many fans are having with him right now is the shooting has taken a major step back.
I don't think since he has been back from injury, we've seen him take a three-point shot.
We haven't seen him take a deep mid-range shot.
So some concerns, even the free throw form hasn't looked how it looked last season.
So when you think about Paulo, think about Franz, you think about the fact that they need shooters around them.
I think Markel, again, has been a guy that we all have rooted for.
We want him to work out because, again, the potential is there.
Currently, what we have built, whether it's Wendell, Paolo, Franz, what we have become as our core, he unfortunately, if he can't shoot the ball, at least a mid-range shot,
And then on top of that, he's a free agent this summer.
I've said it before in our group chats and stuff.
I would be okay bringing him back, but it would have to be for a role that is not a starting role anymore.
It would have to be for a backup point guard role just because...
And again, the shoulder issue seems to be continuing.
We've seen, again, the form kind of go backwards.
If you're trying to make, again, a playoff push, it's either you go all in on AB, which I don't think AB is ready today to be that guy that drives us to the playoffs.
Jalen sucks has proven that he's not a point guard, major improvements shooting the ball, which is huge and great to see, but he's not a point guard.
So that's where it's like, all right, we got to figure this out.
And one thing that kind of sucks is the magic to never make a trade around the trade deadline weeks ahead.
They wait until the very last minute to pull the trigger.
And my concern is somebody might beat us for Malcolm Brockton.
Another team might go out there and offer a good deal in the next few days.
So that's the issue that I'm having with the Magic.
It's like I get the whole waiting and evaluating all your options.
But if you're sure this guy fits what you're trying to do and you make that decision...
We had three days off just this past week.
Would have been a great time to pull a trade and get that guy into practice before you get back into action.
So February 8th, in my mind, is when something will go down.
Um, but in my opinion, honestly, man, I think the Markel experiment can continue, but he cannot be the guy you depend on solely to be that starting point guard, because unfortunately we've seen it.
And I mean, you mentioned Michael Brockton's games played.
Let's not even go to Markel because it's, it hasn't been a good thing in the last, what, three, four years.
So how do we count on him for the next four to five?
Evan Fournier, not sure if he'll be happy to be back in Orlando, but if he can see the court, I think he'll be happier.
He saw some minutes recently, but I think it's because they are shopping him.
So they were like, hey, he can still play basketball.
But the good thing here is two guys that can shoot the ball.
That would be the only advantage that I would see if we were to make this move.
I don't see the Knicks trading with the Magic.
And again, I don't see Fournier wanting to come back to Orlando.
I think if you're a Magic fan, you have to be ready mentally for that day because it's going to come.
Whether it's again in a couple of weeks or it is in this offseason or next offseason, it's going to happen.
To your point, I've identified really four guys in my mind that you're like, all right, those kind of are our core pieces.
And that is, again, Paulo, Franz, Jalen Suggs.
You can throw in there whether it's Cole Anthony or Wendell Carter.
Injury prone players, guys that we're trying to see if they fit in.
Funny enough, I'll throw in there Mo Wagner just because the France combination and Mo Wagner is going to be here for a while, in my opinion.
But outside of that, you have another 10 roster spots to kind of play with that can be built around that core.
Again, I think teams are preparing better for Goga.
In the last few weeks, he wasn't as productive anymore because they were game planning for him.
And I think that impacted things quite a bit.
You could see that that impact kind of was more diminished in recent weeks.
And the guy's averaging, I don't know, 18 points, nine rebounds again.
So you're kind of seeing that impact that Wendell can have.
The issue with Wendell, like many others in our roster, is can he stay healthy?
So we know the Raptors have been selling players off and right.
They're going to be entering a rebuilding stage here pretty soon.
So Gary Trent's a guy that many Magic fans on Twitter, we've seen on X, they like him.
Dennis has some history with Germany and playing with Mo and Franz.
So I kind of like that pairing a little bit.
So this is a trade that, again, I wouldn't mind it one bit.
We've talked about it at length in this episode.
But if you're determining, hey, the time has come.
I wouldn't hate the return, if you ask me.
That would solve a lot of issues in one trade.
I kind of like this one because Markel gets to go back home, and he loves playing in Washington.
We've seen that happen where he just balls out when he goes back to Washington.
So this could be a good move for him, right, to play with Jordan Poole and Kuzma.
Maybe he finds his rhythm out there and revives his career even more with the Wizards.
Only thing with this trade is I think the Wizards would want a lot more.
I think it wouldn't be enough to just trade for Markel and two picks.
I think Kispert alone is a guy that has a lot of value in the league.
He's a body healed kind of developing into that kind of level.
So if you ask me, you might have to throw more into this trade.
I don't know if that means some other type of picks into the deal, but
But if you can land Tyus Jones and Corey Kispert, you're landing yourselves, again, a playmaker which you need and a shooter which you need.
He plays point guard position, which we need to upgrade.
I think he's the one guy that's attainable, shouldn't cost us too much, and would fit in right away with what we're doing in Orlando.
Because if they ask for a guy like, again, Anthony Black, just because he's a rookie, or Jeff Howard, are you comfortable doing that to kind of take on these two guys?
I think he's part of the future of this team.
Yeah, Howard, he's looked really, really good in the G League.
So like, again, is he part of your future?
Are you trying to open up minutes for him next season?
So a lot of question marks around the team.
But this is a trade that if you can get it, again, you're getting that sniper and you're getting that playmaking point guard.
That could play next to Jalen Suggs, next to, you know, Paolo Franz.
And I can see this being realistic also because we know our front office.
They like to trade guys to places where they're going to be comfortable, where they feel good going to.
And again, Markel going to Washington would be that place, in my opinion.
Way more than, you know, Portland or whatever it may be.
Has Jeff finally decided to be, you know, hey, I'm done being nice.
We're sending you to, I don't know, Minnesota.
We're just making the move that's best for us.
a drastic change in the locker room or on the court for that matter.
I'm thinking of like cold weather and like totally different setting for him.
So I think that's a guy to me that I'm like, if you can go after a player that kind of fits every kind of bucket that we, that we need to fit that are weaknesses for us today, he'll be that guy.
Some that we were like, ah, that would be a dream scenario.
Like he had in there, you know, Trey Young as a potential trade.
I don't think there's any kind of chance that happens, at least not this season, maybe in the future, but definitely check it out.
That created chaos in Pat Beverly's mind.
That was a loser mentality for Wendell to have.
Where this kind of gets a little more dramatic is the fact that now we're finding out there are some reporters, including actually our own Brett James, that witnessed this, that that reporter that asked that question, it all started with Brandon Kravitz on social media this morning saying, I don't recognize that voice.
Like, I know the voices that are there in that in that room.
that are magic media writers, whatever it may be, coverage for the team.
And then someone replied indicating, hey, I was there.
I can attest to the fact that that was a planted reporter that was sent there by Pat Beverly to ask that question to Wendell Carter.
It was all done to get a soundbite out of it.
Again, Brett James confirmed this as well for us.
If you ask me, you're trying to get more views, more likes on your podcast.
So you're kind of trying to get this soundbite out of Magic players.
But to your point, I don't get the obsession with Orlando.
It also went back to when we were talking about early in the year with Pat Babs and his podcast about Paulo and Franz being ranked, I think, the 40s in the NBA.com's player rankings.
And he keeps taking shots and shots and shots at Orlando for no reason.
He's a weird guy as it is, but this is a new low for me, my eyes.
Like, how do you go to an away team's press conference to get a soundbite for your podcast?
All the love that he's getting, all the attention.
And again, Paulo had a historic, we've talked about this before, Paulo had a historic season last year.
Having a great sophomore year, doesn't matter.
So I really hope they go to San Antonio next week and put on a show.
Paulo has some highlights against Wemby because that would be ideal for us.
I keep saying, why are we not getting any attention?
I will say to you, and Magic fans that are listening to this, the schedule does get easier.
But things get a little bit easier heading up into February and March.
This week ahead, you've got to find a way to win at least two games, right?
You've got to beat Memphis at the very least tonight.
if you can steal one against Dallas and Phoenix or Phoenix, so go three and one, that would be ideal.
But in my mind, if you can go two and two, I'll be perfectly fine with that.
Also don't forget next Thursday is the announcement of the all-star reserves.
So Paulo and Carol hopefully will be an all-star next time that we record next week.
Um, so definitely looking forward to that.
And I think the biggest thing for me is that every team around us that we're competing against in the Eastern Conference has gotten better, has made a move to get better.
So every team around us has made a move to stay competitive and stay ahead of us in the standings.
And that's kind of the thing we have to figure out.
Do we want to just see this team as is, which we could, and I've said it before, we can just, to your point, weigh things out.
We can evaluate in June, July when we have cash to spend, we have picks to use.
But if we have come to a point where we say, hey, man, we have a chance this season to make an impact, to make the playoffs, as of this recording, we're only one game back of Miami and Indiana for the sixth and seventh seed in the East.
If we can put it together, which, by the way, we have the easiest schedule remaining in the NBA.
So if you can make a move that is a smart move, acquire the right pieces, we might finish six in the East.
And who would have thought that back in October?
I don't think many of us did, being realistic.
So that's what the front office has to figure out.
Are we truly trying to make a push to make the playoffs this season?
And I don't mean to go after a star player.
I mean, like adding the right pieces, adding a shooter.
If Markel, you figure out, hey, there's something going on with his shoulder.
You've seen every team around us get better.
Does that make you want to make a move more?
That was I go back to our recording before the season.
We did our season predictions and that's what we wanted.
I mean, the only thing that leads me to believe that there'll be a move to be made is the fact that Jeff has made a trade every single trade deadline since he got here, right?
It all started with a Terrence Ross trade, and now you fast forward to last year.
There's always been a minor move, whether it's been trading for a second round pick like Mo Bamba last year, always does something.
you know, whoever may be out there, a, um,
I can't think of anyone that comes to mind.
It may not be to that extent, but I think we do make a move just because I think the glaring issue with the team right now is shooting, right?
So I wouldn't be surprised because I think about a guy like Chuma Okiki.
These are guys that are free agents also for us in a few months.
So if you trade them now with maybe a pick attached to it,
You're giving up a guy that you're going to let walk no matter what in a few months.
with the hopes of getting a guy to come to Orlando that you're going to retain.
Let me kind of link it all together, too, to what we heard this afternoon or this morning from Jake Fisher from Yahoo Sports.
So he did mention in a podcast recently that the Magic have been linked to a lot of guards in recent months.
He went back to talking about Dame Lillard.
But he's been pretty accurate when he's talked about the magic in the past.
So he did say the magic had been in the market for a guard, primarily a point guard.
One that makes no sense to us is Lowry, which I don't think we would want him in Orlando no matter what.
If that happens, I'll have some issues, bro.
He's one of the few reporters that I believe when he speaks about the Magic.
And he's talked about, again, Markel Fultz, Wendell Carter possibly being shopped.
So there's something that, again, we may know that the Magic are trying to do.
I just don't think it's going to be a major move if they make a move.
I wouldn't be surprised if they go after, again, a shooter.
But with that being said, what do you think about Jake Fisher, those reports?
You think there's any kind of truth behind them or do you think they're just kind of guessing about what the magic might do because of the glaring issues that we have?
